The point on the People-Process-Technology KM model at which People and Process intersect is the point perhaps most subject to the sabotage of human nature: particularly, the instinct for self-preservation.

Dave Pollard looked at ‘information behaviors’ and concluded that “what impedes the sharing of information in most organizations is our personal and shared culture, rather than inadequacies in technology, knowledge management, or learning programs”. Listed are the cultural factors that cause most knowledge failures.

Sure, most of these issues can only be solved by getting the right People into the system to begin with and compensating them in innovative ways. Others, however, can at least be mitigated if Technology and Process both support the People to such a degree that their natural inclinations and systems for personal protection are reduced to wasteful gyration and simply fall away.
